Telnet security issue addressed

At 21:00 GMT today, Apple released the Mac OS X 10.3.4 Update. The nice thing about this update is, that it fixes the telnet security hole everyone was talking about lately. I don’t know if other URL-related security issues were also fixed, I’ll check it out later.

Update: All security issues described here are still present in OS X 10.3.4. Further reading about the URL vulnerabilities is available here.

Apple to slow down the pace of major OS X releases

As you can read on News.com, Apple plans to slow down the release pace of major OS X versions. Starting from Mac OS X 10.1 (which was the first really usable version of OS X), Apple has released a major update once a year. I am wondering how much they will slow down.
Microsoft has always been very “slow” in releasing minor and major versions of its operating system. In various books about software engineering and programming techniques, you can read that one should never change too much at one time, because the risk of loosing control over the changes and “getting lost” grows with the number of major modification made on a piece of software. I am asking myself if that rule is also applicable to operating systems. One indication to prove that theory is that Microsoft has been forced to push back release dates of Windows many times. I guess it’s very hard to get the right amount of items on a feature list for a major OS release, since you want to add value for the majority of all your customers and on the other hand, it would be more reasonable to keep the number of new features concise.

Movable Type 3.0

I have updated my weblog system to Movable Type 3.0, and I am very happy about the new version. I have not yet activated the comment registering option (via TypeKey), since there is a much better interface for deleting several unwanted comments at once. The best way to fight against spam in weblog comments would have been to implement system using an image containing a control code one have to enter to validate a comment…
Anyway, I also adapted the XML feeds and I can now offer RSS 1.0, RSS 2.0 and the Atom format.

Back from Belgrade

Well yes, I was in Belgrade (Serbia-Montenegro) for a few days because a cousin of mine was getting married there. I had never been to Ex-Yugoslavia before so I can check off one item on my list containing all countries I’ve never been ๐Ÿ™‚
To all people who would not go there because of safety reasons I can just tell, that there is absolutely nothing to be worried about (as long as you are not a serbian politician).

PHP 5.0 RC1

Some days ago, I compiled and installed PHP 5.0 RC1 on my local machine running OS X (10.3.3) and everything seems to work fine. If anyone is interested which ./configure command I used, here it is:
'./configure' '--prefix=/usr' '--mandir=/usr/share/man' '--infodir=/usr/share/info' '--with-apxs' '--with-ldap=/usr' '--with-kerberos=/usr' '--enable-cli' '--with-zlib-dir=/usr' '--enable-trans-sid' '--with-xml' '--enable-exif' '--enable-ftp' '--enable-mbstring' '--enable-dbx' '--enable-sockets' '--with-iodbc=/usr' '--with-config-file-path=/etc' '--with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql' '--with-gd' '--with-libxml-dir=/sw' '--with-jpeg-dir=/sw' '--with-png-dir=/sw'
The bold options are those I added to the standard Apple configure string used for the bundled version of PHP.

Semester Thesis cancelled

Well yeah, these things can happen. To my defense I must say that I am not responsible at all for this. The work I was supposed to do was based on the ongoing work of someone else, and unfortunately, that work lead to a negative or maybe I should say not satisfactory result.
