Lost In Translation

I’ll keep up with my good habits and write just one quote of the movie that is mentioned in the subject:

“For relaxing times, make it Suntory time.”

By the way, it was a great movie, but unfortunately, I was just starting a stomach flu the day I saw the movie. I haven’t been to a cinema since then.

Happy New Year

I wish everyone a happy new year! On new year’s eve, I went to watch the fireworks and caught a big cold. It is one more time I am sick during holidays, I hate that.

MyPC.jpgAs I wrote before, my semester thesis involves some work regarding .NET, so I managed to get a PC. It’s a Pentium 3 at 800 MHz only, but it seems pretty fast. I should do some speed tests to compare it to my 800 MHz iBook G4 🙂
I installed Mozilla Thunder- and Firebird as standard internet apps and they work fine. After that, I tried to install Visual Studio .NET and after having installed IIS from the XP installation CD, Visual Studio would finally install. The weird thing is: I cannot start a new ASP.NET project because it tells me that “the specified Web server is not running ASP.NET version 1.1”. The .NET Framework 1.1 and IIS are installed. What do I need in addition to that to get ASP.NET running?

Look-alike contest

In the beginning there were a lot of different web browsers for Mac OS X. In fact, there were 6 or 7 browsers using 5 different rendering engines. Then, in january 2003 came Apple’s Safari Browser. Up to now, 2 browsers have been assimilated to the Safari look: Have a look! On the pictures you see the upper parts of browser windows. From the top: Apple Safari, Mozilla Firebird and Mozilla Camino.

I’ll just say that …

Even a broken watch is right twice a day 🙂

Microsoft QA

Two weeks ago, I installed Windows 2000 on my iBook using Virtual PC. Everything went fine until I wanted to use Windows update. There were plenty of updates ready to install when a dialog with the license agreement appeared and a JScript Error message appeared. The error leaded to have the ‘I accept’ button deactivated. There was no way to install the updates beside to install IE 6 manually. After having installed IE 6, everything went fine. It would have been funny if IE 6 would have required some Windows 2000 servicepack :).
In my opinion, it is stupid to have an update mechanism relying on HTML and JavaScript.

Mono on OS X?

Why did I install DotGNU instead of Mono? Well, I took a quick glimpse at the Mono project website and didn’t find any information of Mono running on Mac OS X. But it turned out it does run on OS X. I will have a look at Mono quite soon then.
The reason I want to be able to run .NET based programms is that a part of my semester work deals with a GUI that is programmed using the .NET Framework.

DotGNU

DotGNUWindow.jpgSome days ago I installed DotGNU on my PowerMac G4. There was no binary installer, but all the packages complied without any problems!
DotGNU is a free implementation of Microsoft’s .NET framework. It’s not complete yet, but some of the System.Windows.Forms classes are already available. The GUI stuff works with X11. I wonder how difficult it would be to have a ‘native’ implementation for Mac OS X using the Cocoa framework.
I guess I’ll have a look at C# since DotGNU has a compiler capable of dealing with that programming language.

iBook G4

I sold my old 600 MHz G3 iBook and bought a new G4 powered one. The speed difference is huge. Finally, I have a Mac capable of using Quarz Extreme. Especially when using Exposé, you realize which kind of power lies in this technology. The window animations run much smoother and the overall UI responsiveness is quite improved.
