Find the difference, II

About a week ago, Nokia announced a new Symbian based smartphone called the Nokia 3230. Nokia clearly didn’t spent much time inventing a new phone design since Sony Ericsson had already done a big part of the job for them.

Find the difference

What’s the difference between www.google.com and search.yahoo.com? It’s hard to tell, really.

Navigation arrows for text processors

Say you’re writing a big piece of text – like a master’s thesis or some sorts. You have progressed pretty well and have already written over 40 pages. Playing around with the line-height value, you could even push that number to 50.

Suddenly, you want to check out something you wrote in one of the first chapters and quickly get back to the position where you were editing. Wouldn’t it be nice to have navigation arrows in Word or TeXnicCenter or whatever, allowing you to quickly get back or forth in your document navigation history? I think I should file this idea for patent 🙂

Broken listings package

The latest tetex distribution (v2.0.2-36) available using fink 0.7.1 (actually I installed it using the apt-get command) on Mac OS X has a broken listings package. In fact, the file listings.sty is missing, but all other files seem to be present (/sw/share/texmf/tex/latex/listings). To quickly fix the bug and install the latest version of listings, download the archive, expand it and enter following commands in your terminal:

appletree:~/listings-1.3 user$ latex listings-1.3.ins
appletree:~/listings-1.3 user$ sudo cp *.sty *.cfg /sw/share/texmf/tex/latex/listings/
appletree:~/listings-1.3 user$ sudo texhash

Loorenkopf

Loorenkopf.jpgToday, I went to the Loorenkopf on my bike, and I realized I definitely need a new one. It’s 15 years old, the brakes don’t work as well as they should and the chain is somehow enlarged in a way it doesn’t match the gear wheels perfectly producing a very annoying noise.

Oddcast Text-To-Speech

While speaking computers are not a ‘new thing’ and nothing exciting has been going on lately in this field, I was given a URL to a very evolved test-to-speech system from Oddcast. Hear for yourself!

AirTunes is smart

AirTunesIsSmart.pngWhat’s makes a product really good? Well, maybe the concern to useful details, like the one pictured here. When choosing to stream the iTunes music to my AirPort Express station, I get an alert, if there are no speakers attached.

Apple technologies for Windows

RendezVousPrinterWizard.pngAfter having installed Rendezvous for Windows Technology Preview, it was a piece of cake configuring my shared printer (which is attached to the AirPort Express base station) on my Windows XP machine.
I must also tell, the AirPort administration tools for Windows are 1:1 equivalent to the Mac versions and work as expected.
